STATISTICS AND OPERATIONAL RESEARCH FOR CUBA

Educational standards in Cuba have always been very high, as education is a national priority. Unfortunately, given the difficult economic situation, Cuban universities are no longer able to purchase academic materials abroad. They have become isolated from the international academic community. Textbooks are outdated and academic journals no longer arrive.

Statistics and Operational Research for Cuba is a new initiative, arising from personal contacts with the University of Matanzas, that attempts to give academic support to Cuban universities. This is a technological university built in 1972. It has about 400 members of staff and awards about 3000 degrees each year. It provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and research instruction in biotechnology, agriculture, education, engineering, information systems, management, veterinary science, etc.

The University of Matanzas particularly needs textbooks and journals on econometrics, time series, business forecasting, optimisation, multi-criteria decision-making, multivariate statistics, and statistics applied to management. It may be possible to extend the link to other universities if your response is sufficiently generous.

We have a small grant from the Science and Society Trust to pay for some postage, but your support is still needed to purchase academic materials and to pay for sending them to Cuba.

If you are planning to visit Cuba or want to support this initiative, please contact Cecilio Mar Molinero at the address below.

If you would like to support the Science and Society Trust contact Professor J Rosenhead, Operational Research, London School of Economics, Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE.
